About Us

The ABC Photo Society Inc was organized on October 26, 2010 as a Pennsylvania non profit corporation.  Several informal organizations dating back to 1952 predated the organization of ABC Photo Society Inc.  (The Altoona Camera Club and The Altoona-Blair County Photographic Society were two of the previous incarnations of the club.)

The society currently has around 50 members representing Blair, Bedford and Cambria counties. The photo society features local, national and international programs, with how-to sessions on such subjects as lighting, closeups, night pictures, composition, travel and nature photography. Phototaking sessions and field trips are organized.

Two formal competitions, one print and one projected image, are held yearly.  These contests determine the Photographer of the Year and other awards.  There are photo scavenger hunts, photocircuits, traveling objects, workshops and yearly competitions.  The society shows an annual “Alphabet Soup” program where members present a slide, print or digital for each letter of the alphabet.  From our trips and outings, members take photos and then are invited to show them at a designated club meeting.  There are “Show and Tell” sessions for displaying and critiquing prints, slides and digitals. There are also informal competitions on special topics.

The society is a member of the Photographic Society of America and participates in its International Club Competition. Local members have had gold Medal photos in this circuit and have had their entries included in the PSA traveling Top Winners show.  Members have won national and international competitions and/or sold photographs for publication.

Most of all, we have a lot of fun with photography and enjoy the fellowship with each other.

    • Hi Cindy, we do have two meetings in May. We recently turned in our photos for our spring competition, so on May 1st, we’ll be (unoficially) judging some of the photos. We’ll show one of the categories and let everyone there score them and give comments before sending everything to our official judges.
And for our May 15th meeting, we had a presenter cancel, so we’re thinking about an outdoor photowalk. We’ll post here when we finalize a spot to meet, but we’re leaning towards somewhere in Hollidaysburg.

  1. Hi, I was wondering if there is a fee for joining and if it matters on the type of camera used? New to this and would like to learn more about photography.
    Thank you in advance.

    • Hi Lora, the club dues are only $25 a year. But if you’re in our area, we’d love to have you stop in and check out a couple meetings. We have members of all different experience levels and with all kinds of cameras. There aren’t any requirements, just an interest in photography. Due to some scheduling conflicts with the library, our February meetings are out of the normal schedule. We’ll be meeting on the 12th and the 20th. Let me know if you have any other questions. -Eric

    • Hi Deb. Stop in and check out some of our meetings when you get a chance. We’d love to have you. We don’t have many pro photographers in our club. Nearly all of our members are simply hobbyists. If you enjoy photography, you’ll fit right in.

  3. Hi my name is Stacy. I reside part-time in Williamsburg Pennsylvania. I am interested in photography hobby clubs and was wondering if you were currently having meetings and would be willing to have a new member in your group. Thanks in advance for your reply.

    • Hi Stacy. We’d love to have you check out our club. Right now our meetings are in limbo due to the Corona Virus outbreak. We canceled our meeting on Mar 16th. Our next meeting is scheduled for April 6th. And we’ll see how things shake out. Our current plan is a night photo outing to Fort Roberdeau on that night. But if the weather is bad, we’ll have a program in the Hollidaysburg Library (if the libraries are opened back up at that time.) Keep checking back here as we get closer to April 6th to see what our status is.

  4. Hello. When will your next meeting be held? The first Monday of next month? Also for dues, are those paid/collected in person or paid online?

    Thanks so much,

    • Hi, I’m sorry I didn’t get to this earlier. Our next meeting will be on the 16th. Our meeting times have changed a little bit. The library closes at 8pm, so we will be starting our meetings at 6:30pm. Since we couldn’t hold regular meetings until this month, there is no membership fee for 2021. For next year, we’ll have an address listed as a place to send a check for the $25 membership fee (or it can be paid in person at a meeting).

  5. Do you have any idea if there is a Camera Cub in Worthington, PA or somewhere close to there? I can’t find much on the internet.
